All therapists and health care workers at Thuthukani are part of the multidisciplinary team supporting our children in their education and their journey in growing into self-fulfilled adults. They work closely together with the educators, parents, and other professionals involved in each child’s development and education. They are fully involved in school life and apply their skills not only during therapy sessions, but also through all activities that our children are involved in. They work with the surrounding communities in advocating for disability and ensuring integration of our learners into the community.
Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy is offered to learners with a variety of physical disabilities and where learners experience physical barriers in participating in their education and childhood. Therapy is done individually or in small groups and ranges from improving mobility and gross motor development to rehabilitating injuries in our young athletes.
Occupational Therapy
All the children in our school receive weekly occupational therapy in a group setting. Selected children also receive individual therapy or are part of small therapy groups. Therapy ranges from supporting children with profound disabilities with sensory awareness and activities of self-care, to supporting learners who are ready to leave school with pre-vocational skills.
As a service to the King Cetshwayo District, our Occupational Therapists also deliver an assessment service to learners referred to our school to establish if our school is suited to the child’s special educational needs.
Social Worker
A dedicated Social Worker at Thuthukani Special School’s role extends beyond traditional expectations. The Social Worker is committed to ensuring the wellbeing of each child by conducting home visits upon referral from the teacher or therapist. These visits not only strengthen our connection with families but also allow the Social Worker to tailor interventions that promote a nurturing environment for every child.
In addition to individualised support, the Social Worker facilitates counselling and group sessions that cater specifically to the unique needs of our learners and staff. This proactive approach fosters a supportive community within the school, where children feel valued and understood by focusing on their emotional and social development. We empower them to thrive academically and personally.
Working at a special needs school presents distinctive challenges and rewards. It requires a deep understanding of each child’s abilities and challenges, as well as a compassionate approach that celebrates diversity. The Social Worker’s role encompasses advocacy, collaboration with families, and partnerships with educators to create inclusive and empowering learning environment by fostering a supportive and inclusive community.
Therapeutic Horse riding
Dayspring Equestrian and Animal Farm donates an opportunity for a group of children to benefit from the therapeutic effects of riding and interacting with horses. Therapeutic horse riding is beneficial in normalising muscle tone, improving muscle strength, balance and general gross motor movements. Therapeutic horse riding furthermore improves sensory and emotional regulation, communication and socialisation. Selected children who have Cerebral Palsy or Autism Spectrum Disorder are included in this programme.
