To be a teacher at Thuthukani Special School, one needs to be a very special, highly qualified, adaptable person.
Teaching learners with intellectual disability requires patience, perseverance and creativity. Our teachers are key to the upliftment of each child in the school.
Many of our learners come with additional needs, such as needing assistance with basic skills like feeding, dressing, socialising, playing, etc. Teachers are all dedicated and willing to go the extra mile to assist each learner to have a safe, loving, caring environment where they can learn and grow in their own unique, special way.
At Thuthukani, we do not separate our learners by disability, we choose our classes based on the learner’s age and ability to learn. Therefore, our teachers have diverse learners in each class, and they are skilled at managing all types of learning styles, and learners with various disabilities. Our reasoning behind this is that we need to prepare our learners for the challenges they will face in their communities. We found that by integrating our learners, they learn from and teach each other to care for and assist their friends who have different needs.
All teachers at Thuthukani are true to their calling – education and support of the learners in their care.
