Staff Development

As a school for learners with intellectual disability, Thuthukani strongly supports staff development.

Each new staff member receives an induction which covers the framework of South Africa’s policy on inclusion, as well as an introduction to the values we hold dear and the way we work at Thuthukani.

Teachers are kept up to date with the latest developments in curriculum delivery and best practices in the classroom.

We have regular in-house training and learning sessions on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and daily South African Sign Language (SASL) lessons. Refresher courses on other topics are offered whenever the need arises.

We have hosted outside specialists to improve our skills in e.g. play-to-learn, computer skills, chemical use, etc.

All class assistants and other support staff are included in specific training sessions for skill building and development.

Members of staff are encouraged and assisted to attend training courses run by the Department of Education as well as other institutions or private bodies. The staff members who attended training courses are then expected to share the best learning points gained during the training they have received with the rest of the team in specially arranged training sessions.
