Staff Compliment

Thuthukani Special School has a dedicated, hardworking group of staff members who carry the learners in their hearts every day. In addition to the guidance from the Department of Education, the school also operates under the capable guidance of the Thuthukani Special School Governing Body and School Management Team.

Our staff consist of 39 Teachers, 11 Therapists (Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, a Social Worker and (soon) a Speech Therapist), 1 School Nurse, 51 Class Assistants, 3 Office Staff and 19 General Workers. We have a high staff to learner ratio – 1 member of staff for 3 learners.

Funding for our staff comes from the KZN Department of Education (67), SGB Employed (18) and Volunteers (39).

Every member of staff receives continuous training and support to ensure that each member of our staff is knowledgeable on how to approach, teach and interact with our learners.

Many young persons from our community apply to be volunteers at our school, with the intent of gaining work experience, and learning how to work with persons with disabilities. To ensure that we train as many persons as possible, volunteers must actively seek employment while working at school, as their term of volunteering can only be two years.
